The Cuban and queen of salsa music Celia Cruz stands out on a United States coin. There have been many awards that the singer of ‘La vida es un carnival’ has received, but this is an incredibly special honor that further denotes the impact of Hispanics in our country.
The sole executor and representative of the Celia Cruz Estate, Omer Pardillo-Cid, joyfully announced the circulation of the coin dedicated to the Cuban singer, one of the most beloved and outstanding artists of the 20th century.
Celia was chosen as one of five outstanding women celebrated by the United States Mint’s American Women Quarters Program series.
The Queen of Salsa, who died in 2003, looks slender on the coin, dressed in a Cuban robe next to her motto ¡Azúcar!

American Women Quarters is a program awarded by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, celebrating the achievements and contributions of women in this nation.
This year, Celia Cruz, as well as Patsy Takemoto Mink, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, Pauli Murray and Zitkala-Ša, was chosen to appear on the coin.
It is the first time that an Afro-Latina has been honored in this way.
“Celia received so many awards during her lifetime that it was difficult to expect a greater honor to be bestowed upon her than those she had already accumulated during her legendary career. But having been honored by the American Mint is something that would have greatly surprised her, since she was a simple and humble woman,” commented Omer Pardillo-Cid.
“The adjective ‘unique’ has been used a lot, but I really can’t find another to describe Celia Cruz. Unique and eternal,” he stressed.
Celia Cruz was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1925, and until her death in 2003 she took her singing and music around the world, while spreading her distinctive flavor and joy.
After 21 years of her death, the fame and affection for this emblematic artist continues to grow daily. Celia Cruz has become the most beloved Hispanic singer in history.
The iconic performer, who received countless recognitions and awards during her lifetime, including three GRAMMY®s and four Latin GRAMMY®s, was first honored by the United States Postal Service with a postage stamp and chosen by the American magazine Rolling Stone® as a of the 200 best singers in history (number 18).
Recently, the toy factory Mattel® perpetuated her image on a Barbie® doll, as part of the Inspiring Women series.
Pardillo-Cid also announced that Leon Medical Centers, one of the leading providers of health care and services for Medicare patients in the United States, took the initiative to give away the coin in a commemorative case to celebrate the event.

The year 2025 marks the centenary of the legendary singer’s birth and this is just one of many events celebrating this historic date.
In June, a commemorative album called ‘Celia Cruz en Vivo: 100 Años de Azúcar’, produced by Loud and Live Studios and distributed by InnerCat, was the first of these events.
The album, containing previously unreleased live recordings of the singer in the mid-1980s, was released digitally and on vinyl with special packaging, and became an instant collector’s item.
