-What are the good qualities of a judge?

Patience, impartiality, attention to detail, and just general respect for the public. Most of the people that appear before judges can’t afford attorneys. And most people don’t understand the rules of procedure, even though I love them dearly. So, we have to be able to have patience with the public to help them understand and help them get through this process. The next thing is impartiality. Everyone has to be given the ability to present their case and to tell the truth. Judges have to try to get what’s right and do what’s right. But the ability to present your case, and feeling like you got heard, safeguards the democratic process. Sometimes people don’t realize that the most important thing is the process by which we safeguard our rights. Then we talked about respect. The community is what we serve. If we don’t take care to respect people, people feel disenfranchised. They feel like they haven’t gotten heard. They feel like the system is rigged. And that undermines all democracy. Another thing is transparency. Judges need to be clear as to why they’re making the decisions. Everyone likes to think that the law is black and white. But the law is seldom black and white. The law is infinite shades of gray. It depends on the facts. Judges do not make law. Judges follow the law. It’s up to the legislature to make these kinds of decisions on questions of how things should work out.

-If elected, what would your main duties be?

I’d be able to cut through a lot of the red tape. Right now, on average, a divorce case takes between a year and a half to two years. Justice delayed is justice denied. So, it’s very important that we try to move things along. Similar happens to criminal or civil cases. There’s no reason why these cases take so long. Some of the things that I would implement are strict procedures, right, obviously with some deference and some accommodations for pro se litigants. I will make myself available should any attorney require it at 7 in the morning every day. I’d be willing to stay late for any type of trial or any type of evidentiary hearing so we can conclude those matters and not have to reset them.

-The justice system can be complex. What do you have to say?

The judicial system is very, very complex. You really need an attorney because there’s a reason why this is a doctoral level degree and we’re required to pass a bar exam and get licenses. It’s a lot of knowledge and a lot of complexity. I would always advise somebody strongly to hire an attorney. If someone has a low income or cannot afford to hire a lawyer, you can apply to some of these associations and services that they can provide you with a lawyer for free. I do a lot of pro bono. I think more attorneys should volunteer and donate and give back to the community. And I encourage all other bar members to kind of step that up. We want to see justice prevail.

– ¿Cuáles son las buenas cualidades de un juez?

Paciencia, imparcialidad, atención al detalle y respeto general por la gente. La mayoría de las personas que comparecen ante jueces no pueden pagar un abogado. Y la mayoría de la gente no entiende las reglas de procedimiento, aunque las quiero muchísimo. Por lo tanto, debemos tener paciencia con todos para ayudarlos a comprender y ayudarlos a superar este proceso. Lo siguiente es la imparcialidad. A todos se les debe dar la oportunidad de presentar su caso y decir la verdad. Los jueces tienen que intentar hacer lo correcto. Y la presentar su caso y sentir que fue escuchado salvaguarda el proceso democrático. A veces la gente no se da cuenta de que lo más importante es el proceso mediante el cual salvaguardamos nuestros derechos. También hablamos de respeto. Servimos al pueblo. Si no lo respetamos, se siente privado de sus derechos. Sienten que no han sido escuchados. Sienten que el sistema está manipulado. Y eso socava toda democracia. Otra cosa es la transparencia. Los jueces deben tener claro por qué toman decisiones. A todo el mundo le gusta pensar que la ley está escrita en blanco y negro. Pero la ley rara vez está escrita así. La ley tiene tonos de gris. Depende de los hechos. Los jueces no hacen leyes. Los jueces siguen la ley. Depende de los legisladores tomar las decisiones sobre cómo deben funcionar las cosas.

-De ser elegido, ¿cuáles serían sus principales funciones?

Podría eliminar muchos trámites burocráticos. Actualmente, en promedio, un proceso de divorcio demora entre un año y medio y dos años. La justicia que demora es justicia denegada. Por eso es muy importante que intentemos hacer avanzar las cosas. Lo mismo ocurre con los casos penales o civiles. No hay ninguna razón por la que estos casos demoren tanto. Algunas de las cosas que implementaría serían procedimientos estrictos, obviamente con cierta deferencia y algunas adaptaciones para los litigantes pro se. Estaré disponible si algún abogado lo requiere a las 7 de la mañana todos los días. Estaría dispuesto a quedarme hasta tarde para cualquier tipo de juicio o cualquier tipo de audiencia probatoria para no tener que reprogramarlos.

-El sistema de justicia puede ser complejo. ¿Qué tiene que decir?

El sistema judicial es muy, muy complejo. Se necesita un abogado porque hay una razón por la cual este es un título de doctorado y estamos obligados a aprobar un examen de superior y obtener licencias. Es mucho conocimiento acumulado y mucha complejidad. Siempre recomendaría encarecidamente que se contrate a un abogado. Si alguien tiene bajos ingresos o no puede permitirse el lujo de contratar a un abogado, puede solicitar ayuda de asociaciones de servicios que pueden brindare un abogado de forma gratuita. Hago mucho trabajo pro-bono. Creo que más abogados deberían ofrecerse como voluntarios, donar y retribuir a la comunidad. Y animo a todos los miembros del colegio de abogados a que den un paso adelante. Queremos que la justicia prevalezca.
