What began as a festive foray to remember Cuban Independence Day [May 20] in 1999, is now about to commemorate its 25th anniversary as an annual event of wistful remembrance, generational teaching, live musical entertainment, meticulous reproductions and delicious cuisine, revolving around all things Cuban. Cuba Nostalgia celebrates it silver jubilee the weekend of May 18 and 19 at the Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition Center.
“Cuba Nostalgia, year after year, not only reinforces the feeling of homeland among those younger generations but teaches other cultures what is la cubanía,” said morning DJ Franjio. “I’m a perfect example of that. I’ve fallen in love with the idiosyncratic culture of Cuba. I’m Venezuelan, but I’m here representing the most Cuban radio station in Miami, Ritmo 95 Cubatón y Más.”
The DJ introduced event producer Peter Regalado, who recognized the origins of Cuba Nostalgia with his opening remarks. “We have inherited this great event from Leslie Pantín and Emilio Calleja, who had the vision to recreate Cuba for all those who longed for their homeland,” said Regalado, dressed in a traditional white guayabera. “This is our fifth year, and we have sought to bring Cuba Nostalgia to another level in its exposition. Why? Because of the younger generation. We want to attract sons and daughters and grandchildren. That’s why we have recreated exhibits like the Tropicana, La Bodegita del Medio, El Floridita. These are all places younger people can come and hear music and enjoy themselves, and at the same time be exposed to other choice recreations such as La Catedral de la Habana and El Paseo del Prado, so they can visualize a little of what Cuba was like. As part of our commitment to our youth, there will be free admission for children.
“As we did last year, we have again joined with La Ermita de la Caridad [church] to honor the Virgin of Our Lady of Charity with a procession,” informed Regalado. “The Virgin’s procession from the church to Cuba Nostalgia will be on Friday, May 17. She will rest at the Catedral de la Habana. And we will have a Sunday mass at 12:30 pm.”
At the press gathering, held at the Westchester Cultural Arts Center, Regalado on April 18, Regalado excitedly announced the musical participants expected for this special edition of Cuba Nostalgia 2024. Roberto Torres, Lena Burke, Leslie Cartaya, La Diosa and Cuban icon Willy Chirino were all on hand to reinforce their performance commitments.
Chirino will headline the festivities with a Sunday stage show at 7:00 pm. A portion of the premises will be set aside to display Chirino mementos and artifacts from a career celebrating his 50-years as a musical entertainer. On exhibit, among other things, will be the suit and wedding dress Chirino and his singer wife Lissette Alvarez were married in. “We are pleased to announce that we will be presenting for the first time an annual recognition for artistic or business achievement, and this year’s initial award will be bestowed to Willy Chirino,” added Regalado.
“I am Cuban…something that depicts how Cuba was—and how Cuba will be—for the world to see, is something that is very important to me,” commented Chirino.
The 2024 Cuba Nostalgia representative poster features Chirino’s facial image drawn by Havana native Erik Ravelo. “It all came about from a conversation Willy had with a friend. Willy sent a photo, and I was inspired to bring about this homage as a way of signifying everything Willy means to us.”
“We all carry Cuba in our hearts,” said the recently arrived to the United States La Diosa, who has catapulted to fame incorporating diverse genres as salsa, reggaetón and ballads into her music repertoire. “I feel there isn’t a person who can pass by these exhibits without feeling something related to some special time in their lives.”
“It’s an opportunity to demonstrate to Miami—and the world—that Cuban culture lives in all of us here in Miami,” said the Havana-born Cartaya. “It’s always a pleasure for me, since I can’t sing in Cuba, to be able to sing at the [replica] Tropicana because feels like I’m singing in Cuba.”
Appealing to perhaps a younger crowd, singer Leoni Torres and Los Tres de la Habana will be hand as added prominent artists. “We want to thank all media present and to assure everyone we will be at Cuba Nostalgia with a super concert on Sunday,” said the trio, via video recorded message.
Bonco Quiñongo and Carlucho are other entertainers scheduled to share their particular talents with attendees.
All in all, the 25th edition of Cuba Nostalgia promises to be its most star-studded yet. Tickets for either day can be purchased in advance online at cubaunderthestars.com.
Cuba Nostalgia celebra 25 años promoviendo la herencia y la cultura cubanas

Lo que comenzó como una incursión festiva para recordar el Día de la Independencia de Cuba [20 de mayo] en 1999, ahora está por conmemorar su 25 aniversario como un evento anual de remembranza nostálgica, enseñanza generacional, entretenimiento musical en vivo, reproducciones minuciosas y deliciosa gastronomía, que gira en torno a todo lo cubano. Cuba Nostalgia celebra su jubileo de plata el fin de semana del 18 y 19 de mayo en el Centro de Exposiciones y Ferias del Condado de Miami-Dade.
“Cuba Nostalgia, año tras año, no sólo refuerza el sentimiento de patria entre esas generaciones más jóvenes sino que enseña a otras culturas lo que es la cubanía”, afirmó el DJ matutino Franjio. “Soy un ejemplo perfecto de eso. Me he enamorado de la cultura idiosincrásica de Cuba. Soy venezolano, pero estoy aquí representando a la emisora más cubana de Miami, Ritmo 95 Cubatón y Más”.
El DJ presentó al productor del evento Peter Regalado, quien reconoció los orígenes de Cuba Nostalgia con sus palabras de apertura. “Hemos heredado este gran evento de Leslie Pantín y Emilio Calleja, quienes tuvieron la visión de recrear Cuba para todos aquellos que añoraban su patria”, dijo Regalado, vestido con una tradicional guayabera blanca. “Este es nuestro quinto año y hemos buscado llevar Cuba Nostalgia a otro nivel en su exposición. ¿Por qué? Por la generación más joven. Queremos atraer hijos, hijas y nietos. Por eso hemos recreado exhibiciones como La Tropicana, La Bodegita del Medio, El Floridita. Todos estos son lugares donde los más jóvenes pueden venir a escuchar música y divertirse, y al mismo tiempo estar expuestos a otras recreaciones selectas como La Catedral de la Habana y El Paseo del Prado, para que puedan visualizar un poco de cómo era Cuba. Como parte de nuestro compromiso con nuestra juventud, habrá entrada gratuita para los niños.
“Al igual que el año pasado, nos hemos vuelto a unir a La Ermita de la Caridad para honrar con una procesión a la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre”, informó Regalado. “La procesión de la Virgen desde la iglesia a Cuba Nostalgia será el viernes 17 de mayo. Descansará en la Catedral de la Habana. Y tendremos misa dominical a las 12:30 p. m.”.
En la reunión de prensa, celebrada en el Westchester Cultural Arts Center el 18 de abril, Regalado anunció con entusiasmo los participantes musicales esperados para esta edición especial de Cuba Nostalgia 2024. Roberto Torres, Lena Burke, Leslie Cartaya, La Diosa y el ícono cubano Willy Chirino fueron todos disponibles para reforzar sus compromisos de desempeño.
Chirino encabezará las festividades con un espectáculo el domingo a las 7:00 pm. Una parte del local se reservará para exhibir recuerdos y artefactos de Chirino de una carrera que celebra sus 50 años como artista musical. Se exhibirá, entre otras cosas, el traje y vestido de novia con el que se casaron Chirino y su esposa, la cantante Lissette Álvarez. “Nos complace anunciar que presentaremos por primera vez un reconocimiento anual por logros artísticos o empresariales, y el premio inicial de este año será para Willy Chirino”, agregó Regalado.
“Soy cubano… algo que represente cómo era Cuba y cómo será Cuba para que el mundo lo vea, es algo que es muy importante para mí”, comentó Chirino.
El cartel representativo de Cuba Nostalgia 2024 presenta la imagen facial de Chirino dibujada por el habanero Erik Ravelo. “Todo surgió a partir de una conversación que Willy tuvo con una amiga. Me envió una foto y me inspiré para realizar este homenaje como una forma de expresar todo lo que Willy significa para nosotros”.
“Todos llevamos a Cuba en el corazón”, dijo la recién llegada a Estados Unidos La Diosa, quien se ha catapultado a la fama incorporando a su repertorio musical diversos géneros como la salsa, el reggaetón y la balada. “Siento que no hay persona que pueda pasar por estas exhibiciones sin sentir algo relacionado con algún momento especial de sus vidas”.
“Es una oportunidad para demostrarle a Miami—y al mundo—que la cultura cubana vive en todos nosotros aquí en Miami”, dijo Cartaya, nacido en La Habana. “Siempre es un placer para mí, como no puedo cantar en Cuba, poder cantar en la Tropicana [réplica] porque me siento como si estuviera cantando en Cuba”.
Atrayendo quizás a un público más joven, el cantante Leoni Torres y Los Tres de la Habana estarán presentes como otros artistas destacados. “Queremos agradecer a todos los medios presentes y asegurarles a todos que estaremos en Cuba Nostalgia con un súper concierto el domingo”, dijo el trío, a través de un mensaje grabado en video.
Bonco Quiñongo y Carlucho son otros de los animadores programados para compartir sus particulares talentos con los asistentes.
