En 2018, la ciudad de Hialeah creó una comisión dedicada al flamingo, uno de los símbolos de Hialeah Park y del sur de Florida, basada en una escultura del escultor cubano Ramón Pedraza. La estatua del flamingo mide 8 pies de altura en proporción y está en posición de caminar, se podría decir «hacia nuevos horizontes». Casi una docena de artistas colaboraron en esta obra. Un tiempo después, la colorida bandada de flamingos policromados encontró su hogar en zonas designadas de la «Ciudad que progresa».

La idea surgió del alcalde de Hialeah, Carlos Hernández, quien nombró al artista Fredy Villamil como director. Fredy comisarió este proyecto y muchos más para llenar la ciudad de color, historia y cultura. Su participación trajo muchos proyectos inspiradores a la comunidad, incluyendo el hermoso proyecto de flamingos donde la artista, Delfi Cruces fue la única mujer seleccionada.

Con días señalados para entregar el primer flamingo, Delfi comparte que trabajó día y noche para terminar en tiempo, y que se sentía muy feliz realizando su visión. Ella dijo, «Lo terminé y me sentí super bien en ver mi arte plasmado en el flamingo que estaba localizado en el McDonald Park [7505 W 12th Ave, Hialeah, FL 33014]. Muchas amistades lo visitaron y se tomaron fotos con él compartiendolas con amistades y familias, disfrutando así de mi arte. Le doy gracias a Dios todos los días de mi vida por ese bello regalo de poder crear parte de la vida con mi arte.»

Pasó más o menos un año cuando Delfi recibió la llamada de la alcaldía dando la noticia de que se habían robado el flamingo. «Sentí una gran decepción y sufrí su pérdida», dijo Delfi, «La Ciudad pasó mucho tiempo buscando lo y no lo encontraron. Por esa razón, me dieron otro flamingo para reemplazarlo.»

Delfi siguió, «Estoy muy agradecida al señor alcalde y las demás personas que trabajaron en este proyecto de hacer un nuevo flamingo. Trabaje duro para hacerlo mejor, lo cual creo que lo logré … pero siempre extrañando el primer flamingo.»

Delfi, the Artist and her Flamingos

In 2018, the City of Hialeah created a commission dedicated to the flamingo, one of the symbols of Hialeah Park and South Florida, that was based on a sculpture by Cuban Sculptor Ramon Pedraza. The flamingo statue stands tall at 8-feet in proportion and is in a walking position, one can say, «toward new horizons». Nearly a dozen artists collaborated on this endeavor. Some time later, the colorful flock of polychrome flamingos found their homes in designated areas all around the «City that progresses».

The idea originated from the Mayor of Hialeah, Carlos Hernandez, who appointed Artist Fredy Villamil as Director. Fredy curated this project and many more to fill the city with color, history, and culture. His involvement brought many inspirational projects to the community including the beautiful flamingo project where the Artist, Delfi Cruces was the only woman selected.

With days scheduled to deliver the first Flamingo, Delfi shares that she worked day and night to finish on time, and that she felt incredibly happy realizing her vision. Delfi said, «I finished it and it felt great to see my art depicted on the flamingo that was located at McDonalds Park 7505 W 12th Ave, Hialeah, FL 33014. Many friends visited him and took photos with him, sharing them with friends and families, thus enjoying my art. I thank God every day of my life for that beautiful gift of being able to create part of life with my art. »

Almost a year later, Delfi received a call from the mayor’s office giving the news that the Flamingo had been stolen. «I felt a great disappointment and suffered his loss,» said Delfi, «The City looked for him for many months to no avail and they did not find him. For that reason, they gave me another flamingo to replace him.»

Delfi continued, «I am incredibly grateful to the mayor and the other people who worked on this project to make a new flamingo. I worked hard to make it better, which I think I did… but always missing the first flamingo.»
