Palmetto General Hospital has announced the appointment of four distinguished community and healthcare leaders to its Board of Directors, strengthening the hospital’s commitment to governance excellence, community engagement, and patient-centered care. Among the new members is Bryan Calvo, the newly elected Mayor of Hialeah and one of the youngest leaders in the city’s history.
Mayor Calvo brings deep local roots, a strong academic background, and extensive public service experience to the board. A lifelong Hialeah resident, he attended local public schools and graduated as valedictorian of Westland Hialeah Senior High School after completing more than 1,000 hours of community service. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Harvard University on a full scholarship and went on to receive his Juris Doctor from Florida International University College of Law.
Elected Mayor of Hialeah in November 2025 with more than 50 percent of the vote, Mayor Calvo made history as the city’s youngest mayor. His leadership is centered on accountability, transparency, and efficient government operations — values that align closely with Palmetto General Hospital’s mission to serve the community with integrity and excellence.
“Mayor Calvo’s dedication to public service and his lifelong connection to Hialeah bring an invaluable perspective to our board,” said hospital leadership. “His voice strengthens our ability to remain responsive to the needs of the community we serve.”
Joining Mayor Calvo on the Board of Directors is Luis Gonzalez, a respected public servant and longtime Hialeah leader. Born in Santa Fe, Cuba, Gonzalez immigrated to the United States in 1979 and later settled in Hialeah. He studied accounting and management at Miami-Dade College and Florida International University before building a career in sales and entrepreneurship, including owning a local printing business.
Gonzalez entered public service in 2005 and served 12 consecutive years on the Hialeah City Council, concluding his tenure as Council President. He has also held key regional leadership roles, including Board Member of the Florida League of Cities and President of the Miami-Dade League of Cities. His commitment to perseverance and public service continues to guide his work.
The board also welcomes Claudia Miro, a seasoned public policy and government affairs leader with more than 25 years of experience across state, county, and municipal government in Florida. Her career includes serving as a government spokesperson, Chief of Staff to a City of Miami Commissioner, and a member of the executive team of a former Florida Attorney General.
Miro currently serves as Vice President of Business Development & Government Affairs at Freebee, where she leads statewide expansion and strategic partnerships focused on sustainable micro-transit solutions. Widely respected throughout Florida, she has received numerous honors, including recognition from COMTO, Top 50 Women Leaders of Miami, and a finalist designation for the Miami Beach Chamber’s “Bad Ass Woman of the Year.” She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Public Administration from Barry University.
Rounding out the new board members is Emmanuel Hernandez, DO, a physician deeply connected to Palmetto General Hospital and the Hialeah community. Born and raised in Hialeah, Dr. Hernandez completed his Internal Medicine training at Palmetto General Hospital and has been a valued member of the medical staff since 2014. He also serves as the Designated Institutional Official for the hospital’s Graduate Medical Education program, reflecting his commitment to clinical excellence, education, and mentorship.
Together, these appointments reinforce Palmetto General Hospital’s focus on strong leadership, community representation, and high-quality patient care.
