En entrevista realizada en las renovadas instalaciones del Hospital de Hialeah, un Hospital de la familia Steward, encontramos a su dinámica Oficial Ejecutiva la Dra. Marisela Marrero, que nos acompaña a su despacho junto con su Oficial de Operaciones, Shirley Martell.
Q: Díganos, Dra. Marrero, que la motiva a usted a aceptar el reto de esta posición y su preparación para ella.
A: Mi preparación como Medico de Sala de Emergencia derive de me entrenamiento en Harvard con un especial interés en desarrollar el conocimiento del cuidado de la salud dentro de la comunidad Latina, ampliando el uso apropiado de dicho sistema entre la población Hispana. Soy oriunda de Puerto Rico y he vivido en el área de Nueva Inglaterra por los pasados 24 años obteniendo mi título en la Universidad de Yale y mi Doctorado en Medicina de Harvard. Fui co- fundadora y presidenta de ALPFA, una organización dedicada a la promoción del liderazgo Hispano; trabajando como corresponsal médico para Telemundo y NECN en Boston. También fui vicepresidenta de Operaciones del Centro del Buen Samaritano, enfocándome en la eficiencia del centro y asumiendo su presidencia en diciembre del 2018. Como líder en el campo de la salud que ha tenido que tratar con un gran número de pacientes sufriendo de COVID-19, he adquirido un profundo entendimiento de lo que se requiere para liderar un grupo que sea innovador y provea un servicio extraordinario a los pacientes en tiempos peligrosos con un sentido de responsabilidad y entusiasmo.
Q: Dra. Marrero, que nos puede decir de sus funciones como ejecutiva en la operación de los 5 hospitales bajo su cargo Hospital Coral Gables, Hospital Palmetto General, Hospital Hialeah, Hospital NorthShore Medical Center, y Hospital Florida Medical Center?
A: Una de mis funciones es la remodelación de la sala de emergencia del hospital de Hialeah para ofrecer el mejor servicio y poder construir nuevos programas médicos para la comunidad, pudiendo así cumplir nuestra misión que es «proveer el mejor cuidado del mundo en las comunidades.»
En los diferentes programas que ofrecemos podemos dar todos los servicios de cuidados médicos. En el caso de infarto cerebral en el hospital Palmetto, la respuesta es de 27 minutos siendo el tiempo promedio de respuesta en el país de 76 minutos, salvando vidas e incapacidad. Al igual que en cirugía cardiovascular contamos con eminencias a nivel mundial como el Dr. Carrillo. También contratamos con otros sistemas hospitalarios servicios especializados en las áreas que no los tengamos las cuales son muy pocas.
Q: Dra. Marrero en que otros Hospitales del sistema cuenta usted con otros servicios y cuales son ellos?
A: Siquiatría y servicios de sicoterapia y tratamientos de emergencia en el Hospital Palmetto y en el Hospital North Shore los servicios de Obstetricia y Ginecología.
Q: Dra. Marrero que es el más importante logro al que usted aspira llevar a esta organización?
A: Lo más importante para esta organización hospitalaria es la excelencia y calidad en el servicio que ofrece a nuestros pacientes, que es logrado en gran parte por el riguroso y continuo entrenamiento que requerimos de nuestro personal.
Con esto la Dr. Marrero nos invita a un recorrido por sus nuevas instalaciones lo cual concluye nuestra entrevista.

Hialeah Hospital at the Service of the Community

In an interview conducted in the renovated facilities of the Hialeah Hospital, a Steward family, we met with its dynamic Executive Officer, Dr. Marisela Marrero, who accompanied us to her office along with her Operations Officer Shirley Martell.
Q: Tell us, Dr. Marrero, what motivates you to accept the challenge of this position and what has prepared you for it?
A: I am an Emergency Room Physician trained at Harvard with a special interest in developing the knowledge of health care within the Latino community by expanding the appropriate use of said system among the Hispanic population. I am originally from Puerto Rico and have lived in the New England area for the past 24 years, earning my bachelor’s degree from Yale University and my Doctorate in Medicine from Harvard. I was co-founder and President of ALPFA, an organization dedicated to the promotion of Hispanic leadership; I worked as a medical correspondent for Telemundo and NECN in Boston. I also served as Vice President of Operations of the Good Samaritan Center, focusing on the efficiency of the center and assuming its presidency in December 2018. As a leader in the health field that has had to deal with a large number of patients suffering from COVID-19 I have gained a deep understanding of what it takes to lead a group that is innovative and provides extraordinary service to patients in dangerous times with a sense of responsibility and enthusiasm.
Q: Dr. Marrero, what can you tell us about your role as an executive in the operation of the 5 hospitals under your charge: Coral Gables Hospital, Palmetto General Hospital, Hialeah Hospital, NorthShore Medical Center Hospital, and Florida Medical Center Hospital?
A: One of my responsibilities is the remodeling of the emergency room of the Hialeah hospital to offer the best service and to be able to build new medical programs for the community, thus being able to fulfill our mission which is «to provide the best care in the world in the communities.»
In the different programs that we offer, we can provide all medical care services. For example, in the case of cerebral stroke, at Palmetto Hospital the response time is 27 minutes, with the average response time in the country being 76 minutes, thus saving lives and helping prevent disability. Similarly, in cardiovascular surgery, we have doctors of worldwide reputation, such as Dr. Carrillo. We also contract specialized services with other hospital systems in the areas that we do not have, which are very few.
Q: Dr. Marrero, in what other hospitals do you have other services, and which are they?
A: Psychiatry and psychotherapy services and emergency treatments at the Palmetto Hospital and at the North Shore Hospital we provide Obstetrics and Gynecology services.
Q: Dr. Marrero, what is the most important achievement to which you aspire to lead this organization?
A: The most important thing for this hospital organization is the excellence and quality of the service offered to our patients, which is achieved in large part by the rigorous and continuous training that we require of our staff.
With this, Dr. Marrero invites us to a tour of her new facilities, which concludes our interview.
Shirley Martell, the Chief of Operations graciously led us the tour, accompanying us and showing the different facilities under construction and those already completed that provide a spacious and comfortable environment for patients, with large waiting rooms and comfortable seats.
