Cuba Nostalgia announced their annual cultural celebration at the Westchester Cultural Arts Center, April 20. Billed as the “biggest and most prestigious Cuban cultural event in South Florida,” the indoor, ethnic jamboree takes place Saturday and Sunday, May 20-21, at the Miami Dade County Fair & Expo Center.
Multi-talented Cuban singer, pianist, composer and actress Aymée Nuviola and South Florida favorite Albita Rodríguez will be part of the entertainment card. Other well-known Cuban artists performing will be the famous mother and daughter singing duo of Malena and Lena Burke, singer-songwriter Leslie Cartaya, salsero Nic N’Taya and baritone vocalist Luis Bofill. Also appearing is comedian and entertainer Boncó Quiñongo, who will be sure to liven up the bill.
“It’s a pleasure to bring this annual entertainment to our public,” event producer Peter Regalado said. “We want to keep our culture alive for our children and grandchildren and to be able to continue our traditions, though we are outside of our native island. We have 14 interactive exhibitions within the 300,000 square foot space.”
For half a century, the most important religious symbol of the Cuban community in Miami has been the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, where a special statue of the Virgin resides. “On Sunday we’re going to have a mass at one o’ clock, celebrated by Father José Espino,” Regalado informed. “The Virgin will be taken from the Shrine and brought by procession on Friday night to the replica of the Havana Cathedral inside the Cuban Nostalgia locale.”
The special appearance by the patron saint of Cuba appropriately correlates with the 2023 commemorative poster. The poster depicts the Virgin in bright yellow garments hovering over the tempest-tossed boat of the three Cuban fisherman legend has that She saved during a violent storm four centuries ago in the Bay of Nipe in eastern Cuba. The artwork was painted by Ninoska Pérez Castellón, one of the most well-known representatives of the Cuban exile community in Miami.
“I was very excited when Peter asked that the poster be of the Virgin of our Lady of Charity,” said Pérez Castellón at the press conference unveiling. “The Virgin unites all Cubans. It doesn’t matter that religion in Cuba was once eliminated, a Cuban immigrant arrives today and brings his piece of the Virgin. For me, Cuba Nostalgia is very special. It was here that I exhibited my paintings for the first time. That began a spontaneous love affair. Thank you, Peter, for this opportunity to keep Cuba alive in the exile community. I feel very honored.”
This year Cuba Nostalgia celebrates its 24th edition. It is always scheduled around the 20th of May, which marks the anniversary of Cuban independence from Spain in 1902.
Doors open at 11:00 am both days. Saturday’s extravaganza will last until 2:00 am as the organizers requested and received extended operating hours from the county. “Last year, we had to tell 5,000 disappointed people to leave at the 11:00 pm closing time,” Regalado said.
“Maybe this year they won’t want to leave at two in the morning, either!”
Vuelve Cuba Nostalgia con horarios más amplios

Cuba Nostalgia anunció su celebración cultural anual en el Centro de Artes Culturales de Westchester, el 20 de abril. Proclamado como el «evento cultural cubano más grande y prestigioso en el sur de Florida», la francachela étnica bajo techo se lleva a cabo el sábado y domingo 20 y 21 de mayo en el Centro de Exposiciones y Ferias del Condado de Miami Dade.
La talentosa cantante, pianista, compositora y actriz cubana Aymée Nuviola y la favorita del sur de la Florida, Albita Rodríguez, serán parte de la carta de entretenimiento. Otros reconocidos artistas cubanos que actuarán serán el famoso dúo de madre e hija formado por Malena y Lena Burke, la cantautora Leslie Cartaya, el salsero Nic N’Taya y el barítono Luis Bofill. También intervendrá el humorista y animador Boncó Quiñongo, que seguro animará el cartel.
“Es un placer traer este entretenimiento anual a nuestro público”, dijo el productor del evento Peter Regalado. “Queremos mantener viva nuestra cultura para nuestros hijos y nietos y poder continuar con nuestras tradiciones, aunque estemos fuera de nuestra isla natal. Tenemos 14 exhibiciones interactivas dentro del espacio de 300,000 pies cuadrados”.
Durante medio siglo, el símbolo religioso más importante de la comunidad cubana en Miami ha sido el Santuario de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, donde reside una estatua especial de la Virgen. “El domingo vamos a tener una misa a la una, oficiada por el padre José Espino”, informó Regalado. “La Virgen será sacada de la Ermita de la Caridad y llevada en procesión el viernes por la noche a la réplica de la Catedral de La Habana dentro del recinto Nostalgia Cubana”.
La aparición especial de la patrona de Cuba se correlaciona apropiadamente con el cartel conmemorativo de 2023. El cartel representa a la Virgen con vestiduras de color amarillo brillante flotando sobre el barco de los tres juanes, según la leyenda, que Ella salvó durante una violenta tormenta hace cuatro siglos en la Bahía de Nipe, en el este de Cuba. La obra de arte fue pintada por Ninoska Pérez Castellón, una de las más conocidas representantes del exilio cubano en Miami.
“Me emocioné mucho cuando Pedro pidió que el cartel fuera de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre”, dijo Pérez Castellón en la rueda de prensa de inauguración. “La Virgen une a todos los cubanos. No importa que en Cuba una vez se eliminó la religión, hoy llega un inmigrante cubano y trae su pedazo de la Virgen. Para mí, Cuba Nostalgia es muy especial. Fue aquí donde expuse mis pinturas por primera vez. Eso comenzó una historia de amor espontáneo. Gracias, Peter, por esta oportunidad de mantener viva a Cuba en la comunidad del exilio. Me siento muy honrado”.
Este año Cuba Nostalgia celebra su 24 edición. Siempre está programado alrededor del 20 de mayo, que marca el aniversario de la independencia cubana de España en 1902.
Las puertas abren a las 11:00 am ambos días. El gran espectáculo del sábado durará hasta las dos de la mañana, ya que los organizadores solicitaron y recibieron un horario de atención extendido del condado. “El año pasado, tuvimos que decirle a 5,000 personas decepcionadas que se fueran a las once de la noche hora de cierre”, dijo Regalado.
“¡Quizás este año tampoco querrán irse a las dos de la mañana!”
