Sergio Alvarez, RN, Infection Prevention Director at Coral Gables Hospital, is awarded the Leapfrog Pandemic Hero of the Year Award by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers focused on health care safety and quality. This top honor, one of only two awarded nationally, recognizes heroes that have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to patient safety amidst the COVID-19 crisis. The award will be presented today as part of the 2020 Leapfrog Virtual Annual Meeting. 22 other hospital teams and individuals will be denoted with special recognition for heroism during the pandemic.

“Every employee is essential to the care we provide. From the hospitality worker to our frontline heroes. No one ever thought we would live through what we are living through today. Leading the way through this crisis has been Sergio Alvarez,” said Cristina Jimenez, Chief Executive Officer at Coral Gables Hospital. “We salute and recognize the dedication, commitment and courage with gratitude and admiration. His service to patients is saving lives and making a difference.”

“We are honored to recognize Mr. Alvarez as our Pandemic Hero of the Year. He reminds us of the courageous and compassionate nurses throughout our hospitals and communities. The work Mr. Alvarez has done at his hospital and for his community saved lives and comforted so many,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO, The Leapfrog Group. “His story and his example deeply inspired our national selection committee and all of us at Leapfrog. We congratulate Mr. Alvarez of Coral Gables Hospital and his family, friends, and patients, who show us the difference one person can make.”

The Leapfrog Pandemic Heroes Award Committee was impressed by Sergio’s steadfast willingness to put the best interests and welfare of others above his own. He provided his personal cell phone to patients and families, carefully explained test results, and generally served as a calming influence, which helped minimize fear and uncertainty. Because of his humble style, many of his contributions were not evident until later, but they were continuously impactful. Nominations for this one-time award were submitted by hospital staff and leadership across the United States. Winners were selected by an interdisciplinary committee of Leapfrog leaders and advisors.
