Sholmo Danzinger: “A good leader is somebody who has experience in business running a company”

Former Surfside mayor and dedicated supporter of tech startups and industry giants Sholmo Danzinger runs to become next mayor of Miami-Dade County.

The primary election will take place on August 20^th.

-What are the qualities of a good county mayor?

The mayor is more of an administrative role than a policymaker. You’ve got the Commission that puts forward policies, but the mayor’s role is really as an administrator. He or she understands fiscal responsibility, and budgeting. But at the end of the day, you’ve got to manage the people’s money. It’s overseeing projects, it’s putting the right people in place. A good leader is somebody who has experience in business running a company.

-If elected, what will your priorities be?

My priority is fiscal responsibility and that means going through the budget with a fine-tooth comb. It’s cutting wasteful spending. And that translates to a lower tax rate. My priority is to make Miami-Dade affordable for the residents. Now we have the wealthy coming in, which is great. But at the end of the day, the mayor is currently focusing on making affordable housing for those with no money but she´s forgetting about the middle class, the average person who’s been living here for years. They´re going to lose their house because of the rising insurance rates and the tax rate. The first thing we have to start doing is cutting down on our budget and our wasteful spending So we can make Miami more affordable for the residents again. The problem with supportable housing is everybody’s trying to live in a condensed area because they need to be close to work. If you start opening that transportation route, you open availability for housing. It’s all about a reallocation of funds. We have over a $12 billion budget, which is absurd. It’s higher than some states and some small countries. We have such a big budget it’s just being allocated to the wrong things.

-Are we doing enough for affordable housing?

I don’t think that this mayor actually cares about affordable housing. I think it’s to allow developers to build whatever they want. This whole fight with the Miami Seaquarium is about development. And you can mark my word if they get thrown out within a few years. some developers are going to come in and turn that into housing.

-What about the environment?

The County likes to scream about the environment. Sustainability. But meanwhile the county is like the number one pollutant of the state. We had a waste management that was just seeping in garbage and pollution into the bay for the longest time. I don’t think it’s about talking I think it’s about doing.

-Public transportation needs improvement. What do you have to say about that?

They worked on this policy to try to reduce emissions. And what they do is they start reducing the stops where the buses start going to. They started changing the routes. And that had an effect on everyday people. They rely on the bus to go to work. The County can say they’re reducing emissions and we’re helping the environment, but they’re actually hurting people. I think that opening the transportation line will allow people, first of all, to live in areas that are currently not being looked.

El exalcalde de Surfside y dedicado afiliado de nuevas empresas tecnológicas y gigantes de la industria, Sholmo Danzinger, se postula para ser el próximo alcalde del condado de Miami-Dade.

Las elecciones primarias tendrán lugar el 20 de agosto.

– ¿Cuáles son las cualidades de un buen alcalde condal?

El alcalde es más administrativo que formulador de políticas. Para eso está la Comisión que propone políticas, pero el papel del alcalde es en realidad el de administrador. Él o ella debe entender la responsabilidad fiscal y la elaboración de presupuestos. En fin de cuentas, es administrar el dinero de la gente. Se trata de supervisar proyectos, de nombrar a las personas adecuadas. Un buen líder es alguien que tiene experiencia en los negocios dirigiendo una empresa.

-De ser elegido, ¿cuáles serán sus prioridades?

Mi prioridad es la responsabilidad fiscal y eso significa revisar el presupuesto con minuciosidad. Se trata de recortar el gasto innecesario. Y eso se traduce en una tasa impositiva más baja. Mi prioridad es hacer que Miami-Dade sea asequible para los residentes. Ahora tenemos la llegada de los ricos, lo cual es fantástico. Pero, al fin y al cabo, la alcaldesa se centra actualmente en crear viviendas asequibles para quienes no tienen dinero, pero se olvida de la clase media, la persona promedio que ha vivido aquí durante años. Van a perder su casa debido al aumento de las tasas de seguros y de los impuestos. Lo primero que tenemos que empezar a hacer es reducir nuestro presupuesto y nuestros gastos despilfarradores para que podamos hacer que Miami vuelva a ser más asequible. El problema con la vivienda asequible es que todos intentan vivir en un área condensada porque necesitan estar cerca del trabajo. Si abres la ruta de transporte, abres disponibilidad para vivienda. Se trata de una reasignación de fondos. Tenemos un presupuesto de más de 12.000 millones de dólares, lo cual es absurdo. Es más alto que el de algunos estados y algunos países pequeños. Tenemos un presupuesto tan grande que simplemente lo estamos asignando a cosas equivocadas.

– ¿Estamos haciendo lo suficiente por viviendas asequibles?

No creo que a la alcaldesa le importe la vivienda asequible. Creo que es para permitir a los urbanizadores crear lo que quieran. Toda esta pelea con el Miami Seaquarium tiene que ver con el desarrollo. Y puedes tener en cuenta mis palabras, algún urbanizador vendrá y convertirá aquello en viviendas.

– ¿Qué pasa con el medio ambiente?

Al Condado le gusta gritar sobre el medio ambiente. Sostenibilidad. Pero mientras tanto, somos el contaminante número uno del estado. Tuvimos una gestión de residuos que durante mucho tiempo se filtró en la bahía en forma de basura y contaminación. No creo que solo se trate de hablar, sino de hacer.

-El transporte público necesita mejoras. ¿Qué tiene que decir al respecto?

Tratan de reducir las emisiones. Y lo que hacen es reducir las paradas de autobuses. Comenzaron a cambiar las rutas. Y eso tuvo un efecto en la gente común que depende del autobús para ir a trabajar. El Condado puede decir que está reduciendo las emisiones y que estamos ayudando al medio ambiente, pero en realidad están perjudicando a las personas. Crear más líneas de transporte permitirá a la gente, en primer lugar, vivir en zonas que actualmente no están siendo atendidas.
