Miami Lakes´ Vice Mayor and Council member Tony Fernández seeks to be elected the next mayor of the charming town of some 33,000 residents to work for the citizens of the community.
Early voting starts on October 21st. Final voting day will be held on November 5th.
-What are the qualities of a good mayor?
Somebody that listens to the residents, that always has the best interests of the residents in mind, and somebody that’s always willing to do the right thing. Sometimes ‘people’ make the decisions that are politically expedient, rather than doing the right thing. So, a good mayor is somebody that always does what’s best for the residents.
-If elected Mayor of Miami Lakes, what will your priorities be?
I’m part of this community and I want to preserve the characteristics that make our Town special, while improving the efficiency of our Town services. I want to continue making Miami Lakes an even better place to live for us and for future generations. My priorities are public safety, making sure that our residents are safe. Keeping our taxes low and making sure that our seniors and everybody else can afford to live in the town, as well as keeping the things that we love about Miami Lakes: the parks, the trees, the streets, the sidewalks, the maintenance of all the public spaces. My number one priority is to add two police officers to patrol in town, and we will do that without raising taxes, but creating some efficiencies with the current staffing that we have.
-One of your achievements as a council member was the senior property tax relief program to ease the financial burden for elderly residents. Could you please tell us about that deal?
That is a program that I introduced, essentially to rebate back to the residents the entire cost of the property taxes that they paid to the town of Miami Lakes. The portion of the taxes that they paid directly to the town. When I looked at the budget, I realized that we could save a little bit of money here and there. There’re always opportunities to make things more efficient and cut waste. We were able to fund it for the last three years. We’ve been able to fund it with money that we carried forward from the previous years.
– Miami Lakes is one of the most charming communities in Miami-Dade, and the flow of traffic from neighboring municipalities appears to have affected the lifestyle of the Miami Lakers for several years.
We have to continue working on this to ease the situation. As everybody know, traffic is a regional problem and we need to continue working with our regional partners, with Florida department of transportation, with Miami-Dade expressway authority and with the Miami-Dade County, as well as our neighboring municipalities to create an additional capacity and additional ways for our residents to get in and out of the town.

El vicealcalde y concejal de Miami Lakes, Tony Fernández, aspira a ser elegido el próximo alcalde de la encantadora ciudad, de unos 33,000 residentes, para trabajar por los ciudadanos de la comunidad.
La votación anticipada comienza el 21 de octubre. El día final para votar se llevará a cabo el 5 de noviembre.
– ¿Cuáles son las cualidades de un buen alcalde?
Alguien que escuche a los residentes, que siempre tenga en mente los mejores intereses de los residentes y alguien que siempre esté dispuesto a hacer lo correcto. A veces, la “gente” toma decisiones políticamente convenientes, en lugar de hacer lo correcto. Entonces, un buen alcalde es alguien que siempre hace lo mejor para los residentes.
–Si es elegido alcalde de Miami Lakes, ¿cuáles serían sus prioridades?
Soy parte de esta comunidad y quiero preservar las características que hacen especial a nuestra localidad, mientras mejoro la eficiencia de nuestros servicios. Quiero seguir haciendo de Miami Lakes un lugar aún mejor para nosotros vivir y las generaciones futuras. Mis prioridades son la seguridad pública, asegurarme de que nuestros residentes estén seguros. Mantener nuestros impuestos bajos y asegurarnos de que nuestras personas mayores y todos los demás puedan permitirse vivir aquí, además de conservar las cosas que nos gusta de Miami Lakes: los parques, los árboles, las calles, las aceras, el mantenimiento de los espacios públicos. Mi prioridad número uno es agregar dos agentes de policía para patrullar las calles, y lo haremos sin aumentar los impuestos, sino procurando eficiencias con el personal actual que tenemos.
-Uno de sus logros como concejal fue la conmutación del impuesto a la propiedad para personas mayores, que ayuda a aliviar la carga financiera de la tercera edad. ¿Podría contarnos sobre ese programa?
Es un programa que presenté y fue adoptado, esencialmente para reembolsar a los residentes el costo total de los impuestos a la propiedad que pagaron al ayuntamiento de Miami Lakes. La porción de los impuestos que pagaron directamente al municipio. Cuando miré el presupuesto, me di cuenta de que podríamos ahorrar un poco de dinero aquí y allá. Siempre hay oportunidades para hacer las cosas más eficientes y reducir el desperdicio. Pudimos financiarlo durante los últimos tres años. Hemos podido financiarlo con dinero ahorrado de años anteriores.
-Miami Lakes es una de las comunidades con más encanto de Miami-Dade, y el flujo de tráfico procedente de municipios vecinos parece haber afectado el estilo de vida de los Miami Lakers durante varios años. ¿Qué piensa hacer para aliviar esa situación?
Tenemos que seguir trabajando en esto. Como todos saben, el tráfico es un problema regional y debemos seguir trabajando con las autoridades regionales, con el Departamento de Transporte de Florida, con la autoridad de autopistas de Miami-Dade y con el gobierno del condado de Miami-Dade, así como con nuestros municipios vecinos, para crear capacidad adicional de tráfico vehicular y formas adicionales para que nuestros residentes entren y salgan de Miami Lakes.
