OAKLAND–As per telephone conversation on Friday, with Yiki Quintana, Felo Ramírez partner on 710AM Radio Mambi, Miami, Florida, the Official Spanish Radio Station of the Miami Marlins, Felo Ramirez is still in stable condition at Delaware hospital. Felo (93) was hospitalized during a Marlins road-trip in late April after falling while getting out of the team bus. Inducted to The Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 2001, Felo has won all conceivable awards during a long and distinguished career prior to becoming the Voice of the Marlins in 1993,the first year of the Marlins in the National League, as well as The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame. According to Quintana “he still is in the same hospital, one day feeling better the other day not that good and doctors are not yet ready to discharge him. During the fall he suffered lacerations to the head and arms/shoulders.

As a child in Cuba, I remember listening to Felo on the radio, during the old Cuban Professional Winter League days, prior to 1961 when the Cuban government banned all professional sports in the island. In 1998 I worked with Felo during the National League Championship Series between the Atlanta Braves and the San Diego Padres for LBC(Latino Broadcasting Company)based in Miami, which later became ESPN Deportes as we know it today.

The Marlins are playing a series at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles this weekend, and are scheduled to fly to Oakland after Sunday’s game for a brief 2-game series at the Coliseum Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon. There is a great possibility that Rafael(Felo)Ramírez will not be at Oakland for that series.

Felo is my mentor. And as a friend and colleague of him I ask for all your prayers for a full recovery.
