James Bush III is a member of the Democratic Party, and he is running for election to the Florida House of Representatives to represent District 109.

Since no other party opposes this election on August 18, all voters in District 109, regardless of party affiliation, may vote in the Democratic Party primary election for that office. This is known as the Universal Primary Contest.

-What do you see as the biggest challenge facing District 109 today??

Affordable housing, which also encompasses rent control. And it’s not affordable for people who are renting. We want to try to make sure that we can normalize that industry, so that houses are affordable for people and for families. And that has certainly been a major concern of a lot of the constituents that’s been talking with me in the district.

-Education has been a major part of your career. What specific policies would you champion for Florida’s public schools?

I would champion be making sure that the necessary funding element, the dollars are there so that students certainly won’t miss out. I’ll be slack in terms of having the necessary dollars to be able to receive a quality education. So, funding should be number one priority for me and making sure that the dollars are there. So, the students can have and the teachers can have the environment that is conducive for teaching and learning. Not a shortage. Education is made up of public schools, private schools, and home schools, and we´re going to address those concerns. As long as it doesn’t hinder the public education where teachers are being affected and where students are being slacked, then I would see how the legislature is going to be funding some of those initiatives. The number one priority should be public schools.

-Florida has experienced major policy changes over the past several years. Looking ahead, do you believe the state should stay on its current path in areas such as transportation, Medicaid, property insurance, and housing affordability?

We do need to overhaul the system in terms of property taxes. That’s out of out of control. We’re going to have to bring that back to a controllable state so that people are almost not taxed out of their own homes. So, certainly we need to have a total reform of the tax system as well. I don’t have to tell you the transportation is just a mess here in Miami-Dade County. I’m quite sure it is an issue in other counties, but not in particular in being the third largest county in the nation. We have some major transportation issues, and we certainly are going to have to look at how we can best provide public transportation. I would like to see a committee or a task force put together to look at better ways of how we can provide public transportation. And also housing affordability. Definitely. We definitely have to do something to make sure that housing is affordable. And it’s certainly not affordable here in Miami-Dade County. I’m going to look at all of those public health issues and then work towards some workable solutions that we can all work together in a bipartisan way to make sure that we address that issue and so that we can correct it.

James Bush III es miembro del Partido Demócrata y se postula para la elección a la Cámara de Representantes de Florida para representar al Distrito 109.

Debido a que ningún otro partido participa en esta elección del 18 de agosto, todos los votantes del Distrito 109, independientemente de su afiliación partidista, pueden votar en la elección primaria del Partido Demócrata para ese cargo. Esto se conoce como una Elección Primaria Universal.

—¿Cuál considera que es el mayor desafío que enfrenta hoy el Distrito 109?

La vivienda asequible, que también incluye el control de los alquileres. La vivienda no es asequible para las personas que están alquilando. Queremos tratar de garantizar que podamos normalizar ese sector, para que las casas sean asequibles para personas y familias. Y esa ha sido, ciertamente, una de las principales preocupaciones que muchos de los electores del distrito me han expresado durante nuestras conversaciones.

—La educación ha sido una parte importante de su trayectoria. ¿Qué políticas específicas impulsaría para las escuelas públicas de Florida?

Impulsaría garantizar que estén disponibles los fondos necesarios, que existan los recursos económicos para que los estudiantes no se vean afectados. No debemos escatimar en proporcionar los recursos necesarios para que puedan recibir una educación de calidad. Por eso, la financiación debe ser mi prioridad número uno y debemos asegurarnos de que los fondos estén disponibles para que los estudiantes y los maestros tengan un ambiente propicio para la enseñanza y el aprendizaje, no un entorno con carencias. La educación está conformada por las escuelas públicas, las escuelas privadas y la educación en el hogar, y vamos a abordar esos asuntos. Mientras no se obstaculice la educación pública, ni se afecte a maestros o se perjudique a estudiantes, analizaré cómo la Legislatura financiará algunas de esas iniciativas. La prioridad número uno debe ser las escuelas públicas.

—Florida ha experimentado importantes cambios en sus políticas durante los últimos años. De cara al futuro, ¿cree que el estado debe mantener su rumbo actual en áreas como transporte, Medicaid, seguros de propiedad y vivienda asequible?

Necesitamos reformar completamente el sistema en cuanto a los impuestos sobre la propiedad. Está fuera de control. Tenemos que recuperar el nivel manejable para que las personas no terminen prácticamente perdiendo sus propios hogares debido a los impuestos. Por eso, ciertamente necesitamos una reforma integral del sistema tributario. No tengo que decirle que el transporte es simplemente un desastre aquí en el condado de Miami-Dade. Estoy seguro de que es un problema en otros condados, pero particularmente aquí, al ser el tercer condado más grande de la nación, enfrentamos grandes desafíos de transporte. Sin duda, tendremos que analizar cómo podemos ofrecer un mejor sistema de transporte público. Me gustaría ver la creación de un comité o grupo de trabajo que estudie mejores formas de proporcionar transporte público. Y también está el tema de la vivienda asequible. Definitivamente tenemos que hacer algo para garantizar que la vivienda sea asequible. Y ciertamente no lo es aquí en el condado de Miami-Dade. Voy a analizar todos esos asuntos de salud pública y luego trabajar en soluciones viables en las que todos podamos colaborar, de manera bipartidista, para asegurarnos de abordar esos problemas y corregirlos.
